Thursday Sept 21st 1916 (cont).

Rode over to Changla Gali in the afternoon to see "Billy", Met Jack just outside Ghora Dhaka on the same errand, so we went together.

Got back about 7.30 and went straight up to the barracks to pay the 19th Mule Corps drivers. It was a lovely job as they get a whole lot of odd amounts like Rs 5.9.3 and so on. It woudl not be so bad if it finished at annas, but it is not content with that, it goes on to Pies!

They 19th leave here at 5.0.am. to-morrow, for Pindi as they are going on service. A detachment of the 20th M.C. has come up here to replace them.

My two new mules came in to-day. They are both 1st class. 13.2 1/2. One of them is moderately quiet, but the other is a "Taura Barbarry". Neither of them seem ever to have had shackles on them in their lives before, and the drivers had a cheery time coming up with them in consequence. However we shall soon get them tame I expect and they should be very good, both of them.

Friday Sept. 22nd 1916.

Had to finish the "C" Company course at 11.0 to-day owing to the monthly medical inspection of my men. The Officers are dodging ot this month as the C.O. has got three months only, which is a saving both of time and trouble.

Played Footer in the evening against No. 10 again. We drew this time with no score. It was quite a good game.

Saturday Sept. 23rd 1916.

Dished out saddles cleaning kit etc., to the mule drivers this morning. They have each got their own saddle Line gear etc., now and are responsible to me for it. We have not been able to do this before, as we have not had 12 drivers, but now I have got one driver per mule again, and it is possible.

Went up to G.D. at 11.0 and saw the Major, Handed over P.R.I. to him, so I am gradually getting rid of my surplus jobs.

Had a chit form the Adjutant in the afternoon to say that I have got to go on a Lewis Gun course on Oct 1st. It is to be at Upper Topa, so presumeably it is being run by the Yorkshires. there is another one at Gharial on the 12th, run I suppose by the Staffords. Mievill is going on that one.

This course rather upsets my Pushtu. I suppose I shall be able to get leave to go to Murree from the exam is it will only mean a morning off the course. But it will put the lid on the Higher, as I should have had all my work cut out without the course to take up time. The
