Sunday Sept. 3rd. 1916.

I gave the C.O. a shock in the Orderly Room this morning. We had a letter in yesterday to say that Genl. Isacke the Director General of Staff Duties and Military Training would inspect our Battalion on Thursday. That went to the S.S.O. (Frankau). The C.O. got rather fed up woth the old gentleman for coming on a Thursday and wrote back that as he was coming on a Thursday, the only work that would be going on would be Musketry. This morning I showed him a letter that had come in from the S.S.O. in which it said that the usual weekly holiday was to be observed on some other day of the week. The trouble was that this letter had arrived at the Station Staff Office before the one to wich the C.O. had replied that the only work going on would be Musketry. So there were possibilities of more than a mild "ticking off" of the C.O. from Genl. uard. However I fortunately spotted the note and the C.O. wrote (as O.C. Station) saying that the first letter had arrived second - hence his reply, which was the only way of getting out of it. Porr Frankau dropped into it when he arrived! It doesn't pay to get one's C.O. into a row, or even to within measureable distance of one for a thing that one should have noticed. I was not a little glad that I spotted the thing.

Went up to the C.O.'s in the afternoon to the usual Tea and Tennis. Had quite a good time. It began to get quite chilly about 6.0 and I departed.

Noad came back to-day. He has got his operation over successfully. He is going to take over the running of the "C" Company Machine Guh Course, until I finish my turn as Adjutant. When Frankau goes on leave, on the 11th he is going to take over S.S.O.

Monday Sept. 4th 1916.

Went down to see the draft this morning. Had four cases for Orderly Room, all small things which just show that the discipline at home is not quite what it should be - or at any rate what we think it should be, and our discipline is not up to that of the regulars!

Went along at 9.0 with Noad to the M.G. Sec. and got him started with the course.

Got back to the Orderly room about 10. 0. and stayed there till about 1.15.

Slacked in the afternoon.

Tuesday Sept. 5th 1916.

O/R in the morning.

Walked over towards Dunga Gali after but did not get more than about 2 miles along the Pips Line as it commenced to rain.
