Beach, Jack Hewlett Bart and myself set out in a Trans Drimtiu??? Expedition by catching the 9.37 to Peshawa. It was badly crowded but we managed to get seats. At Peshawa we went to the Bungalow of a friend of Jack's -who is the manager of the Punjab Bank at Pesh. There we found our Car waiting for us. It was a substantial looking thing albeit somewhat aged. About 12.0 we left Peshawa on the Kohat Road. All went well for about 5 miles when we suddenly felt a puncture and a nunuti??? later saw two hoops (part of the detachable rim) chasing the car. So we pulled up to put that right. The we started again. The country was cultivated for the first 5 or 6 miles and then began to get more barren + more typically N.W.F. All the Police Stations along the road are big forts. There is are about each 3 miles. Most of the guards turned out + "presented" as we passed.

About 18 miles from Peshawa we passed Fort White garrisoned by some Native Troops + then got accross the Droutui??? into the Terah???. Almost the first thing we noticed then was a gentleman with a Martini. We had only just recovered from our surprise when we met another gentleman also with a Martini. After that it became so Common that we ceased to be surprised except at men without them. It sures??? that way man -excepting Seepers + Coolie classes has his rifle??? -and comes it.
