barbed wire entanglements and they take the trouble to light it up all night with oil and lamps. There is a guard at each end so it seems that the military authorities regard it as of some importance.

We crossed the bridge and turned back along the opposite bank of the river till we eventually got to our company ground having gone about 3 miles as the crow flies but 8 by road.

We saw the piers of the bridge by which Alexander the Great crossed into India 2200 years ago.

Attack was a over a much more important shalim??? than it is now apparently. At any rate there was once a bigger garrison, It is not a pleasant shalim???. Its hot and there is a lot of malaria so I hope we don't come here. I'm safe fro it anyhow unless I get pushed back to a company.

We heard a delightful rumor as to the real reason why we are going to Washena. It is this. The Anii??? of Afghanistan is holding a dunbar on the Roth . He's then going to decide what he is going to do. So they are concentrating a British Brigade at Washena in case of eventualities and to assist him in making up his mind! It may be true but I doubt it!

We hear too that the 5th E. Sumeys??? have gone back to Peshawan??? so there will only be ourselces the 4th Duens??? the 6th Sumeys the 4th Kemp??? at Washena.
