Wed Aug 11.] just made the shift. I "galloped" about in great style. We sort of arranged ourselves into Marching Order with an Advanced Guard out & then dismissed. C.O. 1 & the Major went round the Race Course afterwards. Walked 1 1/2 sides & then cantered & finally finished up with a Galop.
Thur Aug 12. - Orderly Officer again - just my luck. Saw Rations then wrote home for an hour. Mounted the Guard at 8.45 then at 9.0 Beach Jackson & I had a little instruction in Machine Guns from Sgt Pull. We had been at it about 1/2 hr when Jackson fired it & [Thur. Aug 12. to our dismay it went off. How the live cartridge got mixed up with the dummies heaven only knows. Fortunately Beach had laid the gun & the result was that it hit the wall. Had it been laid in the direction in which it originally was we might have killed someone. (Drawing in a train??? isn't pleasant)
