Mon 26 jul.

move to the Liver [??] Barracks and we took it. Had Chotra Hazin [???] at Hardoi [???] 7/30 breakfast at Lucknow at 9/30. After that drove straight to the U.S. Club (Chutter Menzil ???) where we have rooms.

Took a toupa [??] at 11/0 at Sallied [??] for the sightseeing -- in the rain! Saw the Residency first.

It is in ruins now and has only a [????] at interest. Architectural interest there is none. The first part we saw as we entered was the Redaw [??], then we went through the main part of the Residency itself. It must have been quite a large spot. We saw some of the 68 [??] guns which were used by the relieving force. Then we passed to Dr. Fayre's [???] house and saw the room in which Sir Henry Lawrence died. Close by is the Banqueting Hall which was used as a General Hospital. Then we went on in our circuit past the old Brigade Mess round by the Seth Squares to our starting point.

The gardens are beautifully kept and there is a peace air about the place which the calm quiet of the ruins matches. It seems hard to realise the scenes that were enacted here 60 years ago.

From the Residency we went on to the Husainabah Imambara [???]. You enter it through a very fine looking gateway which is not quite so fine on close
