Mon. 19. Jul. 15. Walked right into the town to day. Came back in a Rickshaw round the hill. The path going up was so rough in places that we had to walk quick a lot. It hardly paid to risk being dropped over the ???. Slept & read 2.30 - 4.0. Walked again in the eve. Thro' the Happy Valley & up by another path to the back of the Hotel.
Tue. 20. Jul. 15. Rain. About 10/30 it cleared a bit, so we went out but it came on to rain again heavily & we had to come back in a Rickshaw. Lamont & I have booked two horses for the rest of our stay here. We [Tue 20. Jul. 15. went out about 4/30 tonight. I had a chestnut & very soon found that he pulled. I constantly had to check for Lamont. He cankered up the hill by Fitch's like smoke & I had all my work to hold him. We went on & on & finally got right up to the church & Landour??? & then down & back a shorter way. I was beginning to get tired & thought the pony was too. However when we got down Fitch's Hill & went up the corresponding hill the other side I had the dickens of a job to hold him. I got him down to a walk & thinking all was well got into a trot again. When & where exactly he took charge I don't quite know, but he did, & went gallopped along the Mall??? scattering Rickshaws & pedestrians
