138 Wed Mar 3 off by Gharri at about 10.30. That sounds very nice, but there was some excitement in gettng the gharri.

Higgins had arranged to call for me at 10.15. Just about that time I went round to his bungalow & found a very much overloaded gharri still there. So I told him to call for Cotton while I chartered another one. Eventually we all got fixed up & we went off from the Mess in great style.

We reached the station at 11.0 & wangled the Book??? Club to give us two cheap tickets on one form "L" as Cotton had forgotten to bring any.

At 11.20 the train came in. We succeeded in getting an empty compartment. We tossed for the top bunk. Higgins was old man and so had to take it.

??? PHOTO of Clark's Hotel Benares ???? One does not get a maximum amount of sleep in an Indian railway train, especially when you stop at every station. I woke up thoroughly at about 4.30 & proceeded to dress. Just about 5.0 we stopped at Moghal Serai?? We wandered over the bridge accompanied by two bearers & numerous coolies with luggage and got on to the other platform just as a train was going out. So we got in leaving our bearers & luggage stranded. When we were in we began to wonder if it was the right train. However it put us
