208 Thur. Dec. 31. Spent the morning writing home. Part of the afternoon ditto. At 3.0 I adjourned to Tennis and play three sets with Lamont???. Fri. Jan 1st 1915. Reverlle??? 5.0 am. Paraded 5.50. The men turned out well and we marched to the Bu.??? Parade Ground. That was only to the other end of the square. At 6.30 the Bu.??? moved off. We marched (about 3 miles) to Dighe Ghat. the road goes through bazaars??? all the way. They are quite interesting but horribly dilapidated. That is one thing that strikes one about all the native part of India, everything is terrible down??? all the natives turned out all along the route. The road is of the usual type round here. Bumps in the centre & dust at the sides. 209 [Fri. Jan. 1. At the wharf at Dighe we found a steamer waiting for us. It belongs to the B & N.W.R. & is called the "Comorant???" In ordinary life it is a ferry I think. She carried 600 of us quite easily. It was jolly cold going, so much so that we all stood round the funnel to get warm. We landed at Bankipore??? about 8.20. One officer was left with each company to take them to the Camping Ground & to see them settled. The rest went straight off in a motor to Government House. I left Hickling??? with the Coy???. They gave us a wash, brush up first which we enjoyed muchly. I sat next to a fair damsel and consequently did not have as substantial a ??? as I might otherwise have done. The rest of the officers turned up about 5 mins??? after we had sat down.
