Mon Dec. 21]

Search had told me hers was the top flat & out of the 3 possible top flats I tried the wrong two before hitting the right one.

I got a very good welcome & spent a very enjoyable afternoon. They have been rather hit by the war. As soon as war was declared poor Mr Search got the push & they had rather a hard time for a couple of months. I think the brother in Ceylon helped them a lot. However he is in again now & they have let half their flat So things are looking up for them. Mrs Search complains very much that there's no one here who cares a straw whether you sink or swim. They have, she says, no real friends in Calcutta as they had in Madras. She also said that Medical Missionaries have quite a good time and enjoy themselves some.

When Mr. Search came in about 6.45 we went down to get??? to the Market which is rather interesting. Of course all the shop people are natives there, but with a little judicious bargaining you can get almost anything much cheaper than at THE shops.

We drove back to the Hotel about 9.0??? & then I left them to drive back to their flat in the same gha???

As I had no dinner jkt??? & no really respectable mufti suit I cut Dinner & went to bed quite early.

A tailor here Francis by name took my order for a suit of flannels & a dress jacket at 11.0 & I had the first fitting at 2.30 which is not bad work. He promises it by 4.30 tomorrow
