Sun. Aug. 9

Went to the 8.0 at St. Johns. Mr. Macasery took it. Got a paper on our way home but there was nothing very startling in it. Liége still holds out. the Goeben is still at large in the Mediterranean.

Went to the 11.0 on the hill after SS at 10.30 at Greenhill. Mr. Ellis preached. He was v.g. as usually. We had special War Prayers with the litany.

There was a meeting at the Rec. at 3.0 went over. It was chiefly an appeal to men to join Regs. Terriers or Nat. Reserve. About 1000 there I should say.

Went to S. Peter's in the eve. Mr Sampson is away so Rev. ??? was officiating & preaching. I noticed he wore a preaching scarf. It was much nicer than a deacan's stole! - which of course, he wd. have worn otherwise.

Mon. Aug. 10

News to-day of a French victory in Alsace. They have taken Altricht & Mulhouse. there were at first reporst of huge casualties (45,000 in all) but it seems that only about 100 French were killed or wounded. The feature of it all was the dashing Bayonet changes of the French. The Germans apparently did not stop to argue the point. The Alsatians are immensely pleased at the return of France! After 44 yrs!

The town of Liége seems to be in the hands of the Germans but the forts still hold out intact.

Rode to Willisden & back in the morning via Wembley Pk Neasden & Twyford. Saw Miss Dumer off in the aft. Had a walk in the eve.

They want 100,000 men & 2,000 officers now as a second line of the Reg. Army . Prob. they will push those commissions thro' before I get mine - worse luck!

French success at Altricht & Mulhouse
