226 Fri. May 15

Tennis 3-5. Singles all the time 3-4 with Robinson 4-5 with Dixon.

Slacked in the evening.

Sat. May 16

Went for a short trip in the punt in aft. Paraded at 7.30 for Night Opers. We went by train to Upton. (S. of Didcot on Newbury line) Then we carried out an attack on a hill held by Keble. The first two miles were excrable. The road had been used for farm work when muddy & had solidified. 2 miles of it! Then after some ploughed fields we got on to downs. This was better. Suddenly after about 5 miles (total) marching we were startled by a rocket; fired presumably by a Keble man. After a bit people thought of lying down but we had been so badly shown up that a machine gun would have finished us. We then charged.

Keble held the position in the form of a hollow square & let us walk into the odd side!

The rockets were a great game. They were fired over us: so tyey did not show up Keble themselves.

We then marched to Churn??? about 1 mile. The G.W. kindly took the train from a cutting into the station & so gave us a light to march on. A peculiar thing was for ages we did not seem to be able to get nearer than 1/4 mile of it & then suddenly we were
