Mon Feb 16.

Spent most of the day working. Went to Pusey at 8.15. Carey was continuing his lectures of last term to intending Ordinands. As usual he was excellent. His subject was "Devotion & Devotions" A priest must be devoted to God but to do this it is not necessary to work oneself up in to a great state of emotion about it. One loves one's mother & is devoted to her instinctively not by working oneself up to do it. Similarly it must be with God.

He is very keen on a priest getting his devotions over (& in these he includes Mattins) before Breakfast. He considers it the bounden duty of a priest to say Mattins & Evensong daily.

Tue. Feb 17.

An eventful day. Commenced by doing a semaphore parade at 7.15 am then after a morning of work more or less went to another O.T.C parade (Morse this time) at 1.30. The worthy fellow who was supposed to be teaching sending could not send for little apples. His dot was thus: - ???DIAGRAM??? his dash thus: - ???DIAGRAM??? The only real difference being the pause at that position in the dash.

Fired with the OTC. spirit suddenly I set off with Dicky and a rifle to S. Hinksey range at 2.30 After much wandering & many diligent inquiries of sundry inhabitants we found it. As I did not know my rifle at all
