174.

Sun. Mar 22.

Went to the 8.0 at Greenhill. To the 11.0 on the Hill. Mr. Joyce Preached. - Oh he is a sleepy old dear! Had a walk in the aft. Hill in even. Mr Ulis. What a contrast to Mr. Joyce this morning!

There is much excitement just now over Ulster. Several officers in Ireland who were ordered to move there refused & resigned their commissions. The number of them is about 100. One regiment are reported (and it seems pretty true) to have thrown down their rifles & refused to budge. The Government is in a mess and I don't quite know how they will get out of it.

Mon Mar 23.

Had a morning in bed. Went to Town in aft shop-fuddling. After tea at the Pater's we went on a 7.15 to hear Carey at St. Alban's. The women's side was full at 7.30. The men's filled rapidly and by 7.50 the aisle was chock full. They began filling the chancel then and they were actually sitting on the altar steps! Carey was Carey. That's enough to say. He spoke for some time on Salvation. He regards it as a present thing not as future. There are, he says, four stages. (1) Jesus knocks (ii) The heart says "Come in" (iii) Jesus comes in then
