there were only three of us in the carriage to Crewe.

The journey was a pleasant one. I had lunch on the train at 1.45 and an excellent lunch it was. The log of the run is in my log book. Nothing startling. The train was heavy but it is booked too easily for a big engine like Sir Frank Rae to have any real work to do.

Mr. Ball arrived at Stockport a few minuets after I had done (I arrived at 3.40). We caught a train to Heaton Chapel at 4.0?? an had a cab from the station. Arrived at Redcroft. I had a very hearty greeting from Mrs. Ball

and Mary - to say nothing of Vic. Miss Pinck was also there. After tea we put a few finishing touches to things ready for the Drive.

At 6.30 we went to change

At 7.45 the guests began to arrive. At 8.15 we began to play. The programme was tournament whist. This has sundry little exciting items like misere hands, hands in which winners count double and so on but otherwise is just like ordinary whist.

At the end of 12 games we adjourned to the top of the house for supper. My supper partner was a very nice girl but a bit of a freak. She had been
