at 2.0 after quite a decent tiffin we pursued our uncomfortable way. It was objectionably hot & we both sweated despite the fact that we were only sitting in a Tonga.

The road had for a mile or so been along the bank of the Shelum river & now we crossed it by a toll bridge. One over the bridge we were out of India & in the native state of Cashmiri.

For the next seven miles the road gradually ascended at an even gradient, sometimes passing through cuttings or tunnels, mostly cut out of the face of the sheer rock falling to the river below. It was very pretty all the way. At Charta we suddenly struck inland form the river which we had up to now been hugging and in a most disappointing way lost nearly all the altitude we had obtained by descending in a long zigzag to a bridge over a large stream.

Then we rose a little again but we came to Dulai where we had tea at the Dak Bungalow - at a height of 2180 ft. It is a pretty little bungalow & they did us quite well. By this time we had done 41 1/2 miles & were
