to Pindi by train and march up to Murree. I don't quite see why we are marching up to Noushire rather than training it. I suppose it is a good thing to show troops on the Grand Trunk Road now and again.

We had Mess at 7.0 and Lights out at 8.30 and there weren't many of us out of bed for very long after.

Thursday March 9th.

14 mules yesterday, 16 today. From Pindi 29. The odd mule is explained by the fact that the camping ground last night was 1/2 mile from the main road.

We passed the monument to General John Nicholous to-day. It is simply a huge obelisk sticking up in a pass in the hills.

It was a pretty strenuous march today. The Transport was not ready to time so we could not move until 7.30 instead of 7.0 and the half hour made a difference.

We camped at the Ain ??? Abdul. There are 6,000 Nepalese troops in camp there. They are the Army and the Native State of Nepal more or less lent to the British Government during the war. They have two British officers per Battalion. These officers are Gurkhas. The Nepalese are very much of the Gurkha type. Four of
