1916
Saturday January 1st
No work to-day in honour of 1916.
Frankau handed over S.S.O. to me yesterday so I had to go up this morning. No excitement except the turnings??? of the 2/4th Sommersets troop train for the night of the 15/16th. So we shall probably move about the 18th.
Our Mesopotamian Casualties were published last night. 2 Killed 1 Missing 1 Died 8 Wounded. A fair proportion out of 50. 3 of the were men I knew fairly well & at least in among the draft I took to Bombay. Worrham (Old A") is missing too.
There took place in Devapur this afternoon a ceremony which, had it occured in 1915 would have been the event of the year for us. Whether or no it will be the event of 1916 remains to be seen. The ceremony being Frankau's marraige. It took place at 3.30. All the available requirental??? officers were there & nearly the whole of this platoon lined up. After the service the officers formed an arch of swords. the platoon fell in in two ranks & formed a guard of honour to the carraige. Shelatte??? had the horses "bejoued"??? & was pulled by several of his platoon by means of my mule heel ropes! The platoon marched alongside all the way to the Co's bungalow where the reception was held.
