Thurs. June 17 cunningly worked by certain workmen of Travancore. Major Hewett who had assisted his nerves with several surreptitious "Chota Peps" ??? made quite a sporting speech, describing how the C.O. had lamentably failed in his duty. We had volunteers for Tor... ??? Service. He brought us back. He showed no signes of taking us back! He ruled us with an iron hand .. .. ??? and therefore we wished to present him with this bowl as it was a certain anniversary. The C.O. had stood us a falsc of champagne all round and on top one or two officers had a sufficiency of mixed drinks to make them lively. We were pretty quiet until Hickling ??? appeared in a blanket and Esathr ??? and sang "Ol ladies don't be frightened I'm an Indian!" Previously we had played out the wedding. Maches in the book - but that was nothing. After that the fun began. There was an offering ??? in which Higgins Jacks vanished from .. ??? him and likewise his braces. When further his Tie went he looked a pretty object. We next tried carrying Beach in a Rocker chair but collided with a table and gave it up. The major hung his ... band round his neck and insisted that he was "John Bishop of Hereford." On the whole it was some night. Higgins left just in front of me and whether or not it was my war cry or my yell when the Major caught me on the back side with his stick that upset me. I didn't know but he lost his nerve and threw his hurricane lamps in the air with distastrous consequences to the lamp.
