Mon. Mar 8 Our strength was 5 officers - 12 sgts, 133 Rank & File. At 6.17 we moved. I of course had to walk beside the major for 2 excellent reasons:- (i) I can't ride (ii) There was no horse for me to ride. We plugged along solidly by 4-1.2 hrs with halts at the clock hours (7, 8, 9 & 10). We did 2-1/2, 5-1/2, 8-1/2, & 11-1/2 miles to the respective halts & marched into camp at 10.40. The men went at once to their lines and then we had to wait until the baggage arrived. We had tiffin at 11.30 and then in collaboration with Major Machenzie, Rogers & Mg.Hewett, I proceeded to get out "Standing Orders". This took till about 1.30. Then 2 or three fatigue parties were wanted which I had to work, or rather arrange for. They had to put up a bhospital and move a line of rents and in the midele of it all about 3.0 0/c in came the baggage. It rolled in, in batches of about 6 carts at a time. Consequently sorting was a difficult matter but it was arranged. It was not until about 5.30 - after an 1/2 hours break for tea that we got anything like settled. Around that time till it was almost dark we were busy filling mattresses. Meantime I was busy getting out Detachment Orders. I had to arrange the Routine Rc ??? with the major. There will be quite a fair no of fatigues oc ??? wanted tomorrow so that the morning parade will be rather a walk out. I had just about finished a 7.20 when it was time to change for 7.45 mess. I have been busy all day trying to adapt "The Policeman's hat" from the adjuntant ???. Not successfully.
