Morning Parade at 9.15. Hickling defended the Trenches with 2 sections while I attacked them with one. We went about 1 1/4 miles from the Bdge along the main road. We halted there where the end of the Native Village is. Then at about 10.30 we advanced to the attack. We moved along the dotted lines(a) & (b) The main attack ws (a) a party supposed to be one section strong was sent out to the flank via (b). I went with (a). We went along by the side of the road in the depression until we came to the road bridge. ???? Sketch??? There we found a convenient gully under cover of which we could ???? unseen from the Trenches. As we got there the (b) people arrived as well. So we just had to push straight over the open ground between us & the trenches. Fortunately owing to the formation of the ground our left & center were not seen until we got about 300 yds from them. Consequently they thought our whole attack was coming from their left. So we settled down comfortably to gain a certain superiority of fire before advancing; and then saw that they were returning, leaving only about 2
