Wed. Nov 25 for anything but expect to be sent to Salisbury Plain to trian. There were very anzious to know what it was like. Alos what the felling in England was about the war. They say the colonies are solid with us. They told us too about the Sydneyand Emden touch. They went on the wrong side of the Cocos 1s. Then the Cocos 1s wireless sent an S.O.S call. The Jap Cruiser picked it up and set off at full steam. They got another message that the Emden was ashore and went back in disgust. The Sydney got the S.O.S message as well and the Emden chipped in to spoil the line so they viewed where about she was and went for her. The N.2. peope were in Columbo when the Sydney came in and they weren't allowed to ???chie??? ???Newspaper Article??? Solomons. Towards the end of October the New Zealand troppships, uncer convoy of H.M.S, Minotaur and the Japanese cruiser Ibuki, joined the Australian transports at Albany. On November 1, the whole fleet of 38 transports sailed for Egypt, led by H.M.S., Minotaur, flanked by the Sydney and the Ibuki, and rearguarded (if one may use the expression) by the Melbourne and the little Pyramus from New Zealand. In the course of this voyage news reached the convoying squadron that the Emden was raiding the cablestation at the Cocos group, 100 miles to the north-east. The Sydney was at once dispatched to deal with her - and there is no need to retell that story. Except for the cruise of the Australia, mentioned above, nothing later is known by the public of the doings of the Australian squadron, nor would it be wise to hazard a guess at them. ???End Newspaper Article???
