96 Wed Nov. 11. H.T. Del??ia at Sea -- quite a weed in fact. Lecture by Beach in aft. on India. Then I had a semaphore? parade to look after. Just before going down to tea we managed to see Sicily in the dimmest distance on the port side. After dinner busy with photography and then about 9.0 we went on deck. The lights of Malta were plainly visible as we got nearer the looked so inviting that we wished we were putting in for a day. As at Gib. there are searchlights playing around & sweeping about continuously. They are uncomfortably dazzling when you get them full on you. When we got fairly near we rang up Malta! They send so very slowly that it is quite easy to read. Our own light gets reflected on the mast somehow. The messages were as follows. We (calling up) "Dilewana? wishes...." They sent at first with a small light which we could not read owing to a bad fog. Then they changed to a searchlight & all went well. We. "Transport Dilwana? proceeding to Port Said instructed to signal here if safe." There was a pause while the receiver referred to someone else then "Reply yes safe to proceed" "Am proceeding" "Any news" "Konigsburg captured. ??? sunk." I am rather sorry the E??den has been sunk, but I suppose her sporting Captain refused to allow anything else to be done to him.
