86 In???.[Nov.6] "Gile" Are also one or two big guns up there. We went through a tremendous number of these galleries +??? saw practically all the machine gun positions. We also saw a magnificent instrument which finds the range of ships for the guns. It--??s just a telescope with two cross lines in it. ???diagram??? mounted in a stand so cons??? that when you have got it absolutely pointing at the ship with those live cross lines on it, you read off the range from a scale. More than that you have a sort of plan of the sea which is all divided up into squares & each square has a name. The squares are further covered with numbers ???diagram??? and when you want to 87 [???.Nov.6 direct the fire of your gun you just swing this telescope on to the object & you can then read off both the range (??? 25 yds) and the position of the ship(e.g. square??? sorry 35) The gunners have a ??? or plan & set their gun according to your telephone instructions. It's??? a really??? bad look out for anything within range of the guns.
We then went down to see the torchlights. They are worked by a man in a little place about 200 yds from the actual light. This is done by means of electric motors. I worked one for a few minutes. I tried to swing it on to one ship but it was out of our searchlights area. Then we had to walk through several galleries in the dark.
