8 Fri Sep. 18 Paying this afternoon was rather exciting. We found that our last batches of recruits had about 14 days pay owing to them. We hadn't allowed for this, so finally we were reduced to paying them in sixpences (all we had left!0 They didn't seem to mind though. It was all money! Sat. Sep. 19. I was awakened rudely about 3.15 a.m. by a horrid noise outside my window somthing in this line:- ?? Musical Notes ??? Suddenly it dawned on me "Good heavens that's the Alarm." I gave way to my wrath by dropping with a vicious thump on the floor & proceeded to do a rapid dressing act. In about 12 mins. I had my kit-bag packed & was out in the street. Just as I arrived the Adjt was making enquiries of Stralton? "All Present?" "Yessir" -- although Stralton hadn't seem me. We stood out there for an hour & then dismissed. The Brigadier was kind enough to say he was very pleased with the rapid turn out. He conveyed his pleasure to the G.O.C. at Canterbury. Usual Battan. Parade at 8.15. We marched to our usual area. Stratton amused us with section rushes? & put Holt & myself in charge of sections! We did some general rushes? & then 1 sec. watched while the other rushed. Short parade in aft. otherwise slack. I had a shock from the Sgt Maj in the aft in the shape of an Income Tax
