she has partially mobilised. Germany then says this mobilisation is a menace to me, stop it, or I mobilise too! France then says if Germany mobilised I must! If France goes in we must. Today the news is that Germany has proclaimed martial law and that France is getting ready hence what ole morrow may bring & one goodness only knows!

Went up to St. Giles to see the soldiers come down from the Castle for Church Parade. We got there about 9.45 and after waiting some little time discovers that the service was not till 10.30. We then walked up to the Castle Esplanade. There we learned that the Church Parade was cancelled! This was not altogether unexpected by us in

view of the war. We then went on to our cathedral for the 11.0. It is quite a fine Cathedral. It is not quite finished yet though they are going on with the Western towers which will finish it. It is more massive than pretty, and more imposing than ornamental, but the locality just suits it & the tout ensemble is "verra gude". On our way back to the otel we were met by newsboys with Special Editions! On the Sawbath??? too! The news was thus "Germany declares war agst Russia" "whole German army called out French army mobilized." This of course is equal to a declaration of war agst France because France & Russia have a dual alliance. It will mean that we come in I am afraid.
After dinner (2 p.m.) and a sleep eve we went up to the castle & had a look round
