12 Sat Aug 1 Had breakfast about 9.30 then sallied forth in search of a conveyance to take us to Reston. Found the tail end of a motor char-a-vane which was more annoying than useful so we had recourse to a four-in-hand waggonette affair. We got on the box seat & so got the full benefit of the Driver's "explanation." He was a dry old stick! After one of his stories he would turn to his horses with "Coom on up the lot" or "Coom away up noo". One of the fiery steeds rejoiced in the name of "Brandy" They slowed down regularly & automatically when the places came for the "explanations"! However we reached Rosslyn at 12.15 despite a stop at Strait ?? (to water the horses - as the driver observed) we then made tracks for the Chapel where we were mulched? of 1/- ea. Admission. Still the result was worth it. It was really great. The Chapel was really to have been the Chancel of an Abbey only it was never finished. The carving is really beautiful so the ?? and the outside is nearly as good as the "in". It is really beyond. The pity of it all was that we only had 1/2 hour there instead of 1/2 day which we could easily have spent there. From the Chapel we went on to the Castle. (6d please!) This was of course totally different from the Chapel & was more interesting than beautiful. It gained the beauty it possesses from the lovely glen in which it is built. By 1.15 we were on our conveyance again & home we drove to Eden by another road completing the circuit. We promptly made tracks for a teashop & had a tea which had to
