Enclosed with it was a note from the Pater which as it happened I read first. It broke the news rather more gently. It ran

My dear Len. I am enclosing a note in Mother's letter. I am just going in to Paddington to see her off. We are all so grieved at Grannie's death, but we can rejoice also in her Rest. (I had to read it two or three times before I really realised it though Pater's mention of Padd had put me on my guard for some bad news.)

.......... If Grandad would like it we should like you to come down but otherwise I don't think it is necessary.

I shall try and write you later when I hear more from Mother. I think of going down myself on Tue aft.
