Feb. 26. Thur.

had left them I met one of our cpls. He had been detached to look after a couple of cavalrymen who had been seen admiring the view. Accordingly I accompanied him. We lost sight of the cavalry but eventually met our own cyclists or 3 of them nicely. We then distinguished ourselves by catching a company of infantry in the flank and actually persuaded them to charge us. 3 rifles charged by a whole giddy company! After that we retreated, scaring half a doz cavalrymen out of their existence en route. Then cease fire blew & we learnt that the other cyclists had succeeded in spiking a gun. The OC operations having been led to believe that there were two powerful companies of cyclists roaming about inquired our strength at the pow-wow. "The two corps together total 17 men." Collapse of O.C.

Feb. 27. Fri

Began serious work for mods today consequently nothing much else doing.

I heard this morning that Driver (Regius Professor of Hebrew) died yesterday morning. I knew he had got peritonitis pretty badly but did not expect him to pop off quite so soon. Poor old chap. He was 68. So has passed our greatest English Hebrew scholar.
