98. Wed. Jan 21

Had four lectures this morning. 9.0 Maths Griffiths Exeter

10.0 Latin Prose Leighton Pullan U.L.R.

11.0 Burney ΨΨ BK2. This was quite interesting though he mentioned several points I should have thought too elementary.

12.0 Stenning Wadham Rabbinics.

???DIAGRAM??? [actually Hebrew, probably this:] (פרקי אבות) Quite interesting.

He chatted about school schol exams by way of introduction. There was apparently very little difference between Ferguson and the Smiths though F. just forged ahead. I wish CHK had got it.

Went to Robbies in after and had a young sing-song. Wrote home during tea then went and posted it at the Ugger. Dinner at the Cadena. Evening - worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!

99 Thurs. Jan 22

Spent the morning in work. Went for a short ride in aft to Wolvercote and on thro' weird road and a pretty village of unknown name though poss. it may be Godstow and so into the Whitney Road & back.

Worked again in the evening. On returning from dinner I found a note from Davies (Capt. of the Boats) to know if I could turn up tomorrow & foll. days as they are short of stroke side men. I shall wander round to see him tomorrow but I do not want to take up river again this term because unless I have a good chance for Joggers it is not while learning to swim in term and it is not worth pipping mods??? to be spare man or worse. However tomorrow I will have it out with him and we shall see what we shall see.

From Areiel:

The two Hebrew words written are the name of one of the books of the
Talmud "Pirke Aboth" (pronounced "per-kay ah-vote", both words accented on
the second syllable) which means "Sayings of the Fathers".
