Sun. Nov. 23 "STIR-UP SUNDAY"

Went to H.C. at 7.45 this morning. Dramer took it Burney served, & incidentally arrived late - as usual.

Went to Cowley at 11.0. They have Litany at 10.45 So got in at the tail end of it. (Harris was with me). The Litany is made quite a ceremony. I have not yet quite got the hang of their method of doing it. There is a party of 7 at the Chancel steps. Four of whom are in Copes & 2 are Candlebearers. At the "O God arise" part they process into the Chancel. Will describe it more fully when I know it better.

High Celebrations followed. Music fine, all Gregorian.

Slacked in aft. Balliol in even. Not so good as usual. The only artists were a singer & Dr Ernest Walker. The songstress was rather stagey. She sang 5 French songs fairly rottenly but was more at home in her native German, though only one of those five was good. The English songs were all new. Two were good, one not bad, other three ---.

Mon. Nov. 24

Letter from Pat this morning. I hear from him that he has got a motorbike! It is a 1911 Alcyon 2 HP. May get some rides at Xmas! Rowing started again this afternoon after Friday & Sat. rest. There were an eight and 3 fours out. I was in one of the fours. (Berney (Str) Clarke (3) Johnstone (bow))

Stir Up Sunday is the day when Christmas Puddings are made!
