camp. All the way back we heard the shikari lecturing the well meaning cooly on the impropriety of bringing Sahibs 10 miles on a wild goose chase & trying to impress on him the requirement for good Shikhar??? He was disappointed & so were we. We finished drilling??? about 9/15 & turned in at once. Ab 11./30 we were up & on the go again. We followed the same track as last night but again had no luck. Twice we must have been within 15 or 20 yds of bear but couldn't locate them. We could hear them snapping twigs as they went away. And we could smell them! We got back about 3.0 am. Tuesday June 20 We moved today. We had only to cross the river & go about 4 miles up stream, but to cross the river meant going back five miles to a bridge! The stream is quite unfordable owing to the rapidity of the current which is 10-15 m.p.h. We picked up a couple of ponies at the bridge & were very glad of them. it was not as comfortable riding as it might have been as the saddle consisted of an ordinary pack saddle with a blanket over it. Mine had a loose girth and it didn't add to the comfort to be slid off sideways at intervals. These ponies are wonderful little beasts. They are about the size of an undergrown donkey but the way they took us up hill & down for those 9 miloes was almost marvellous. They are extraordinarily "game". We reached our camp about 5 of four??? to first
