Fri Dec 6. burnt out the kitchen and buttery and the rooms over them though the walls are still standing. The fire attacked the roof of the hall as well but they managed to check it before it had done much damage there. The total damage is estimated at £2000. The College Silver is apparently unharmed in a safe among the remnants. Went for a nice ride along the London road as far as Wheatley and back in the aft. Went via Shotover and I don't intend to travel by that road again on a bike. It is too [???] exciting. About a mile of it is over a grass track on a common with plenty of thorns &c about. F.E.Smith at the Ugger this evening. He made a very fine speech. He was in a fighting mood and hit out straight at times. The result of the debate was that the motion "That this House has complete confidence in His Majesty's Government" was defeated by 295 votes to 500 Majority 205 At 11.30 just after we had returned Dixon lost his bags. 3rd time this term! They were after Proud but he was in Sanctuary at Cape's and they have not got him up till now (12.0.) They may have him yet though as I expect they will be on the war path pretty late tonight.
